Throughout our entire lives we are told that we have the power to choose. When you’re a baby you might have the power to choose between juice or milk. As an adolescent you might have the power to choose between doing homework or watching television. And even, as an adult, you might have the power to choose between a car and a truck, a computer and a laptop, even something like having the Power to choose between conventional energy and other kinds (although, frankly, it may not be much of a choice in the coming years). The point is that you always have a choice and the same goes for retirement – you can choose to just sit back and let it slide over you or you can live your life.

For many people, it seems like retirement is the final scene before the third act, but I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be this way. You can still make the most of what life you have left and, being retired, you might find that you have more freedom than ever. Freedom to indulge, to relax or even travel. You have the power to choose and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Staying active after retirement is very important to your physical and mental health. Retirement is supposed to be the best time of your life and its also the time when you should do the things you always wanted to do. For example, if you want to sleep until ten in the mornings then do it. If you want to get up at noon every day then do it but you need to keep yourself busy.

Taking up a new hobby or sport it always something that will keep you busy. Playing golf is a good way for you to stimulate your brain and get exercise. You will be playing golf outside so you will get some much needed sun and you will also be doing something that you love at the same time.

You can also participate in different activities such as bingo or bridge. A lot of times neighborhoods will have groups of people that get together several times a week to play cards and bingo. If you are retired you should consider joining one of these groups because it will give you time with friends and also help stimulate your brain so you can keep thinking on your toes.

Retirement is an exciting time in a person’s life, but some people become bored rather quickly once retirement is achieved. Volunteering is a great way to stay busy and help out the community. Volunteering is a very rewarding experience and may actually change another person’s life for the better.

There are literally hundreds of organizations that need the help of volunteers. Retirees are perfect candidates for volunteer work. An open schedule makes it easy to sign up with one or several organizations.Want more? Click here. The life experience retirees can bring to the table is a huge benefit to any organization. Professional experience can also be applied in volunteering without the strain and demand of a paying job. Volunteering keeps the mind sharp and makes a person feel needed and valued.

Volunteering keeps a person active in the community while making a positive difference. Food banks, hospitals, animal shelters and libraries are all in need of volunteers. Volunteers have the ability to choose the number of hours and days they are available to work. Volunteer work may be nothing more than stacking books or sitting with a hospitalized person. No matter how big or small the job, each is equally important and valued.

Retirement is a wonderful thing. After years and years of working, you are finally free to spend your days as you wish. Boredom is a top complaint of many retirees. However, there are many fun ways to spend your days.

If finances allow, now is the time to travel. Those trips that you did not have the time to take while working can all be taken now. Once you retire, you can start crossing things off of your bucket list, and travel is likely on that list.

After you retire, you will have the time to pursue a hobby. This may be a hobby that you already have, but had little time for while you were working, or just something you have interest in. Painting, building models, collecting stamps, or coins, and woodworking are all excellent options.

If you are interested in home improvement, now is the time to start those do it yourself projects that have been on the back burner. Not only will this keep you busy, but the look of your home will improve in the process.

Retirement is the beginning of a wonderful new chapter in your life. You worked hard to get to where you are, and now is the time to reward yourself for a job well done by using your time to do all of the things you did not have time to do before.

There are several bad habits and nonchalant attitudes that can put someone in a rut after retirement. Things like not preparing, not saving and relying on social security or living lavishly are all examples of bad habits that will jeopardize ones retirement years.

In a Rut after Retirement

Many people have terrible routines like too much spending, not saving early enough, living a lavish lifestyle, not planning, procrastination, not contributing to a 401k retirement, depending on social security alone, underestimating how much you will need, not addressing issues like estate planning, investing too much in company stock, lumping all assets into stocks or just bonds, not diversifying, and lastly not asking questions.

Anyone can get in a rut by practicing bad habits before retirement. The best thing to do to avoid this is to start saving as early in life as possible, possibly in the early 20′s is an excellent idea. Diversify your portfolio with stocks, bonds, money market accounts. Never depend on just social security to support you, it will never be enough. Start planning for retirement and death early, always have an alternative and find a way to invest in company retirement plans early. Plan out everything and save.
